The Prelude

On July 30th, I will embark on a year long journey to college campuses across the nation to share about a love that absolutely transformed the way I live on this earth. A love that transcends ethnicity, gender, personality, time, space, both good and bad life choices- every conditional factor that humans tend to take into consideration when they hand out their love. But this love – God’s love – sees beyond all of life’s circumstances. God’s love stretches to the depths of the deepest ocean and to the heights of the highest mountain, and beyond. His love changed my life forever, and I hope to see it transform the lives of other too.

God chooses to use people to demonstrate His love to others. This demonstration comes in the form of supernaturally healing people of diseases and sicknesses, setting people free from emotional distress, giving of money and time, making poverty obsolete, and loving those shunned by society. For those that did not notice, the adverb “supernaturally” in that last sentence modified each of the verbs – healing, setting, giving, making, loving; for it is God’s supernatural power that will flow through my team and I to make all those things a reality.

Why call this post “The Prelude”? Because LOVE is the precursor to my journey to campuses. Without love, none of those things listed above will happen. Without love, I would burn out and have no direction. My love for God and love for people propelled me to travel to college campuses for the next year to share His love. A love that is more than just philosophy or words, but a love that comes in power and comes in the form radically transforming peoples on a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual level.

And now, all the planning. Building my partnership team – LOTS of phone calls, emails, meetings. Cleaning out my room for my little sister to move in at my parent’s house. Spending time with family and friends. Fixing up this blog. Planning with the team. Setting my finances in order. Selling things on e-bay to raise money. Making sure my car is in good shape since it will literally be my home for the next year. Etc. Wooohooo!!!! I am so excited for what lies ahead.

God either exists or he doesn’t. If you ask me, both possibilities are kind of frightening. There are HUGE implications for both. If he exists, we should probably figure out why he put us on this earth and how to get on his good side. If God does not exist, then nothing we do in this life matters beyond the grave; everything dies in the end. Regardless of which possibility is true, we owe it to ourselves to at least think critically about this topic. We only have one life. Just ONE shot to get things right and to find out what is true. As cliché as this is, we should all take the time to ask the hardest questions about some of history’s most intriguing and important questions: what is the meaning of life? Is there a God?

Some of you may say, “I got life figured out.” To all those who fall into this category, I ask, “have you ever seriously taken the time to search for truth and meaning in a challenging intellectual environment? Do you feel emptiness or dissatisfaction in your life? To those in this group who believe God exists, I ask, “is your belief in God borrowed from your parents because you were born into a God-believing family? Have you actually taken the time to think about what God thinks of you?” To those in this group who think God is a hoax, I ask, “do you believe there is no God because it is easier than believing that there is one? Do you really think you have no greater significance than returning to the dirt you came from?”

Veritas Forum @ UCLA will give you the opportunity to intellectually discuss and question the topic of God, truth, and meaning. What is a Veritas Forum you ask? In colleges around the nation, this organization holds public meetings with audience participation to discuss and question truth, life, and Jesus Christ. It is a time to explore life and it’s very meaning in an intellectual and academic setting.

I write this message to all my friends with a great amount of love in my heart. My December 30, 2009 Resolution

I’m not sure if I’ve ever made a serious New Year’s resolution. Maybe I made a silly one when I was 11 years old and then forgot about it a few days later, but that was probably just to go with the “culture” of making New Year’s resolutions. The times where I’ve made dramatic decisions to change something in my life never fell on the night between December 31st and January 1st. I’ve always thought resolutions were really cliché and didn’t want to be like everyone else. Nothing special happens when the clock strikes 12:00am on January 1st. Why make that decision or change on January 1st, when you can make it on December 30th?

Now, I’m not against New Year’s resolutions. I understand that the symbolic value of having “new changes” for the “new year” helps inspire people to achieve their goals. I hope that people who make serious New Year’s resolutions achieve their goals. I sincerely do. But, because I am young and have some arrogance in me, I want to do something different. So, I am making a December 30, 2009 resolution; it is more of an overarching “life theme” if you will. And rather than lasting one year, it will end the day I leave this earth. The resolution, or “life theme,” is: Don’t just survive. Conquer. I came up with this phrase a few weeks back and even made a toast to it at Acapulco’s with a Margarita in my hand last Monday. For whatever reason, the phrase was on my mind a lot today. So I’ve decided to make it a life theme. Starting today.

The motto is actually nothing new for me. Although I’ve failed many times, I’ve tried to adopt an “all or nothing” and “conquering” lifestyle over the last few years of my life. However, for whatever reason, I want to pursue excellence in EVERYTHING I do with more energy than ever before. Rather than just surviving through something, I want to conquer it. When I commit, I’ll give it 100% of my effort. I never want to settle for mediocrity; I want to excel. I don’t want to just love those that are easy to love; I want to love even those that hate me. And when I love, I want to love with all I have. When I rejoice in prayer, I want to sing praises of gladness to God from the depths of my heart. And when I pray for the broken, the hurt, and the lost, I want to weep and feel the pain that God feels for these people. Instead of fighting just to keep my head above water, I want to walk on the water.

I don’t want to just survive this life, I want to conquer it. There will be times where I fail. But with God, nothing is impossible. In the end, God will be the one that deserves the credit for helping me persevere and succeed in this goal, my December 30, 2009 life-long resolution.

Allow Your Heart to Hurt this Christmas

When you wake up on the morning of the 25th to open gifts, eat food, and enjoy the company of family and friends, take time to remember and pray for those who do not have any gifts, any food, and/or any friends and family. If you see a 10 year old hold his newly unwrapped toy, remember that there are 10-year old child soldiers in Africa that holds a guns instead. I am not saying that we should walk around depressed all day; for celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and spending time with those you love is a joyous event. We must never take this opportunity for granted. But what I am saying is allow your heart to hurt, allow your heart to be burdened by the injustices that happen around the world as you enjoy the Christmas day.

Dictionary.com defines “merry” as “full of cheerfulness or gaiety; joyous in disposition or spirit.” Let us redefine what it means to have a “merry heart” on Christmas day. May ”merry hearts” encapsulate this meaning on dictionary.com, but may the definition of the phrase also extend to a heart full of love. Love for Jesus, love for family, love for friends, and love for those who are poor and are hurting. And may we love so hard that it hurts.

With that being said, may your heart be merry on this Christmas day.
